Lightening Strikes Twice Between Rage and Royals
Yogi Berra infamously said, “It was déjà vu all over again!”. And so it was for the 3rd season matchup between the Northern Virginia Royals and the Reading Rage Saturday June 28, 2008. The last meeting between these two teams (May 31st 1-1 draw) resulted in the game being called due to lightening. Saturday night June 28th, the results were similar, with the game being called in the 84th minute due to lightening. The big difference tonight was that the Rage finished their chances early, not allowing the weather to dictate their results. Rage coach Brendan Burke said, “While the weather was the same, the big difference for us was we finished our chances early, to put the game out of reach. Now we can take a week off for some R&R before heading down for the big matchup against Fredericksburg.”
Like they have done so often this season, the 1st place Rage started quickly, putting their opponents on their heels and allowing the Rage to dictate the tempo of the game. The Rage scored in the 7th and 9th minutes to quickly put the game out of reach. Game MVP and Rage defender Ged Quinn helped out on the offense, heading in a beautiful Jimmy Taranto cross. Two minutes later, Bermuda International Tyrell Burgess, cooly planted Jon Port’s beautiful midfield mastery past the Legacy keeper. The Rage dominated possesion the remainder of the first half and finished the half with an 8-2 advantage in shots.
The second half hardly resembled a soccer game, with more fouls and yellow cards than shots on goal. Neither team provided much in the way of possession or buildup in the second half, but the action was physical between the sides, who have quickly grown into fierce division rivals. In the 84th minute the weather again took over resulting in the premature end to another physical Royals vs. Rage battle. With the win, the Rage are now 10 points clear of 2nd place Fredericksburg in the Mid Atlantic Division race. Also, the Rage defense completed another road shutout. The Rage have allowed only one goal against in their four road games this season. The Rage finish their last four games of the season on the road against Fredericksburg, Richmond, Rhode Island, and Virginia Legacy.

RAge Reload for 2008!
The Reading Rage is gearing up for their thirteenth USL Season, and the roster assembled by the Rage staff is one of the best ever! This year’s roster has a noted “Southern Flair”, with quite a few Carolina, Florida, and Bermuda signings. The signing of Bermuda’s Senior National Team player, Tyrell Burgess, highlights the roster. Burgess will supply some offensive firepower to the squad. Recently Tyrell has featured in the starting eleven for Bermuda in World Cup Qualifying in the Caribbean Region of CONCACAF. He scored Bermuda’s only goal in a 1-1 draw with the Cayman Islands to keep their World Cup dreams alive. In the return leg at the Cayman Islands Bermuda prevailed 3-1 with Tyrell once again starting on the right flank alongside notable counterpart on the left Khano Smith (MLS-New England Revolution). Tyrell and Bermuda will face a formidable test in the form of Trinidad and Tobago in the next round of World Cup Qualifying in June. Tyrell is a junior at Lynn University where he garnered Second Team All-Sunshine State Conference Honors this past fall. The Sunshine State Conference is one of the most competitive in NCAA DII.
Tyrell will join fellow NCAA DII and DIII standouts Omar Cooke (2006 South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year and two time Second Team Member -- Carson Newman College) and Ged Quinn (2006 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year – Lenoir-Rhyne College) and recent signing Jon Ports (DIII NSCAA First Team All-American – York College).
The Rage also have secured the services of eight key members of last years team including Adam Gazda (Region 1 — Lehigh University), Stephen Hogan (Former Irish Youth International, Martin Methodist College), Alan O’Connor (2007 TSAC Player of the Year, Former Irish Youth National Pool, Martin Methodist College), Scott Rowling (Region 1 and United States U19 Interregional All-Star Team 2004, University of New Hampshire) and Gary Higgins (U18 Scottish Schoolboy International and South Atlantic Conference Second Team, Lenoir Rhyne College).
Two pending major DI signing will accompany this talented group. Several other key signings are from Carson Newman College and Penn State University, including a group of very talented young players and local products Jeremy Vuolo (Downingtown, PA/Hartwick College), Liam Fitzwater (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Penn State), Corey Hertzog (Reading, PA/Antietam HS), and Kevin Strunk (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown HS). This outstanding group of players gives the Rage their best opportunity in years to top the PDL league.
Rage PDL Staff up for 2008 Playoff Run
The Reading Rage PDL staff has hired additional staff for the 2008 Season. With former Academy Director and Head Coach Derek Broadley taking over the reigns of the Bermuda National Team program, the Rage has looked internally to continue the club philosophy, game style, and coaching direction that have established the Rage Soccer Club as one of the elite programs in the region’s youth and USL soccer circles.
Brendan Burke has been named as 2008 Head Coach of the Reading Rage PDL squad. Brendan is a former Division I standout at Boston College and has playing and coaching experience in every level of the game. Brendan playing experience includes the Sligo Rovers of the Irish Premier League, the Cape Cod Crusaders (USL), and most recently captained the Reading Rage PDL. Brendan’s coaching experience includes Rage Soccer Club Youth teams and Super Y-League Teams. Brendan will be assisted by former Division II All-American Ged Quinn. Ged was the 2006 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and was the assistant
coach with Lenoir Rhyne University. Brendan and Ged’s playing and coaching experience will translate into a dynamic combination to lead the 2008 Rage PDL team. Former coach Derek Broadley will remain with the Rage staff through the summer as Technical Advisor and provide senior guidance to the Rage coaching staff.
The Reading Rage PDL are also pleased to have former Fleetwood HS, Penn State, Reading Rage, and US Men’s National Team player Troy Snyder involved with the team as Player Development Advisor. Troy will look to assist the Rage PDL Team’s players and coaches garner a better understanding of the college and professional game expectations and atmosphere. Troy’s commitment is to identify talented soccer players and to help them set high goals and develop strategies enabling them to reach their highest potential and, in turn, create a winning environment. As a team player, both on the playing field and in the business world, Troy is adept at establishing and fostering cooperative professional relationships that build a strong, diverse
community.
Coach Burke stated, “I have spent the last 18 months working closely with Derek (Broadley) and have developed a profound respect for his knowledge of the game. With Derek and Troy’s guidance I am ready and eager to accept the challenge of coaching the talented group of players that we have coming in”.
The Rage look to build upon last year’s success with the addition of several new Division I players, All-Americans, and Bermuda National Team players. Also, making his debut with the Rage this season is Penn State bound Corey Hertzog.
Lastly, in addition to adding Brendan, Ged, and Troy to the Reading Rage staff, Art Auchenbach will be assuming General Manager duties to allow Brendan Burke to concentrate solely on Head Coaching responsibilities. Art is a Reading area native (Conrad Weiser High School) and remained active after graduation in the local youth soccer scene as youth and high school coach. Art is one of the founding members of the Berks Soccer Academy and currently serves as the Vice President on the Rage Board of Directors. His enthusiasm and business knowledge will provide the Rage PDL with excellent guidance.
